The Help Center for Ukrainian Refugees

About

Established on February 27, 2022, the Help Center for Ukrainian Refugees at Drumul Viilor 38/1, Chișinău, was founded by the National Congress of Ukrainians of Moldova (NCUM) in direct response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis. The Centre offers vital services dedicated to restoring dignity and hope to those displaced by conflict.

Driven by a mission of immediate care and long‑term resilience, the Centre provides:

  • Temporary shelter for newly arrived refugees
  • Nutritious meals served daily
  • Distribution of essential non‑food items, including hygiene kits, blankets, and clothing
  • Support for onward relocation, assisting individuals and families seeking accommodation or integration in Moldova or beyond

Since opening, the Centre has supported up to 20,000 refugees, offering a lifeline during their most critical moments.

This impactful initiative is a collaborative partnership led by NCUM, supported by Peace Winds Japan and Solidarity Fund PL, alongside 11 additional NGOs and community partners. Through this united effort, the Centre has achieved the distribution of nearly 5,000 food packages, responding to spikes in demand as formal refugee accommodations.

This work ensured that essential supplies reach the most vulnerable—women, children, and the elderly—who often struggle to secure stable income and housing.

Backed by international funding—including grants from Peace Winds Japan, Solidarity Fund PL, and other donors—the Centre exemplifies a humanitarian model based on compassion, collaboration, and continuity.

Stories

Viktoriia Kozhukhar – From Refugee to Mentor

Viktoriia Kozhukhar is one of the thousands of Ukrainian refugees who found temporary shelter in Moldova. A former yoga and dance instructor from Odesa, she arrived in Chișinău with her daughter after walking 11 km to the border crossing. From the very first days at the Help Center for Ukrainian Refugees, organized by the National Congress of Ukrainians in Moldova, Viktoriia became a volunteer, helping women and children arriving from Ukraine. Victoriia worked to organize daily life, distribute NFIs, and provide support to those facing loss and uncertainty. Volunteering became not only a way for Viktoriia to contribute but also a source of strength and inspiration. With the support she received, she was able to regain her confidence and eventually open a yoga and dance studio in Chișinău, helping other refugees restore their emotional balance and return to a sense of normalcy. Viktoriia's experience highlights the critical role of community engagement and volunteer dedication in strengthening refugee support. Her contribution, alongside many other volunteers, enabled the Help Center to serve as more than just temporary shelter—transforming it into a place where refugees could access opportunities, regain stability, and begin rebuilding their lives with dignity and hope.
