"Road of Life" - Evacuation project

About
In the early stages of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the National Congress of Ukrainians of Moldova (NCUM), in partnership with Be an Angel e.V., implemented the "Road of Life" evacuation project to provide critical humanitarian assistance to civilians fleeing active conflict zones. The project addressed the urgent need for safe passage and shelter during the emergency phase of the refugee response.
Between 2022 and 2023, the initiative supported the evacuation of over 18,000 refugees, facilitating transport from conflict-affected regions of Ukraine to Chisinau, Moldova, and subsequently organizing onward travel to safe destinations in Germany, Austria, and other EU countries. Many of those assisted were women, children, and vulnerable individuals requiring immediate protection and accommodation.
The project included logistical coordination, cross-border transport, temporary shelter in Moldova, and collaboration with receiving partners in the European Union. Close cooperation with local authorities and international partners ensured the safe and efficient movement of those in need.
The "Road of Life" initiative demonstrated the capacity of community-based organizations like NCUM to provide large-scale, life-saving assistance in times of crisis and played a key role in Moldova’s broader humanitarian response to the Ukrainian refugee emergency.
