Infrastructure development in Ukrainian Villages of Moldova

About
In 2021–2022, the National Congress of Ukrainians of Moldova (NCUM) implemented a targeted community development project in the villages of Danu, Nihoreni, and Unguri—localities with historically compact Ukrainian populations. The project aimed to revitalize and enhance local infrastructure while promoting cultural visibility and environmental sustainability.
Working in close partnership with local public authorities, NCUM led several key initiatives to improve both public services and community identity. Bilingual street name signs were installed in both Ukrainian and Romanian, reinforcing linguistic inclusion and cultural recognition in these multiethnic communities. To promote sustainable energy and reduce utility costs, solar panels were deployed at community facilities, contributing to long-term energy efficiency. In parallel, new waste management systems were established to improve environmental conditions and support cleaner, healthier public spaces.
This initiative combined infrastructure enhancement with cultural visibility, contributing to broader goals of social inclusion, rural development, and environmental sustainability. Community involvement was central throughout the implementation, ensuring that the interventions responded to local needs and priorities. The project stands as an example of how coordinated action between civil society and local authorities can support underrepresented communities and contribute to Moldova’s inclusive and sustainable development at the grassroots level.
